Don't
let inferior ferrite cores cause your
company to have field failures that
may require a safety/quality recall.
It is a known fact that most ferrite
cores manufactured overseas saturate
at lower drive levels than US manufactured
ferrite cores. Make sure your core
specifications include saturation
properties. An easy inexpensive test
of saturation properties is to measure
inductance with a specified dc bias
current.
Determining
the amount of ampere turns a particular
core (material grade, size, AL/GAP)
can handle without saturating is no
longer daunting. TSC Ferrite International
has developed an easy to use excel
spread sheet that does just that.
Simply input our ferrite material
grade, part size, AL & turn count
and the spreadsheet calculates maximum
dc bias current for no more than 10%
inductance roll-off. The spread sheet
also calculates and graphs Inductance
vs. dc current, AL & Ue vs magnetizing
force, AL & Ue vs NIdc, AL &
Ue vs dc energy storage, for numerous
AL/gaps on the core size and material
grade of your choice. The bias calculator
is available as a download off our
